Okay…so one bad seed can kill the apple but let’s take a reverse look at staffing agencies from the inside out. Both active and passive career seekers are reaching out to diversify their employment search by partnering with staffing agencies or executive search firms. Some have found complete success and others….well, these are the individuals who are hastily to tap into today’s latest and greatest communication vehicle – the Internet. Through social networking sites and blogs to name a few, there are many countless opportunities for one person to taint the reputation of what is truly a satisfactory company.

Yes, there is merit to some of these claims. There are agencies who want career seekers to pay a hefty fee up front and complete mounds of paperwork stunning powerful signing over their first born. On top of this, complete what seems to be more testing than the background investigation for the United States Presidency job. This, of course, after waiting forty-five minutes to speak with a recruiter who can only spare six minutes for a verbal overview of their two-page resume only to be told “we’ll call you if anything comes up.” A couple of days go by and the only thing the career seeker hears is the sound of crickets. Results? Yeah proper! Bad experience? Absolutely! Are all agencies all the same? Definitely not!

This may sound like a bit of venting but I, for one, will take a stand in favor of the quality agencies that do exist. Let’s turn the tables and describe the recount from the other side of the desk. Recruiters are faced with the challenge in today’s tight market of finding that “A” candidate and by “A” candidate, I mean a person who simply has experience in their field, good computer skills, stability in past employment (typically being 3 positions in the last 10 years), positive personality and the willingness to work hard and put some skin in the game. Is that too really much to ask? You’d be surprised. Forget about sales quotas – the last thing a recruiter wants to do is use up an interview time slot on someone that is registering with their agency to box check their unemployment requirements so they continue to receive their monthly check. These people have no desire to be put to work even if they were paid double their previous salary. Agencies constantly receive “stalker calls” from candidates that have registered asking, “Why haven’t you found me a job?!” When asked in return what steps they are taking on their ruin to secure employment it’s the recruiter that begins to hear the crickets chirping.

Imagine having a recruiter as a “career agent” similar to a pro-athlete having a sports agent. They are very influential, have great networking skills and are constantly marketing their pro-athlete for the highest salary and best opportunity possible. Recruiters do exactly the same thing. Career seekers don’t pay the recruiter’s salary or even a fee for helping them find a job but I’ll be darn if they arent the first to complain. For the record, reputable agencies are not going to cut salary. They want the career seeker to remain delighted in their position so they continue to do a good job. If the career seeker looks good – the recruiter looks good and continues to drill down business with that client.

What most career seekers don’t understand is that the recruiter is not the final decision maker when selecting them for interview or job opportunities. It is the client that selects that candidate for interview or immediate start based on their portfolio. The first item that’s reviewed is their resume and you have one shot at fascinating the client and giving them reason to read the rest of your profile. There is a significant amount of people who register with agencies where, in the last 10 years, have been in more positions than the latest Kama Sutra book! Hmmmmm….now try to figure out why they aren’t being called for interviews.

Let’s say the resume format looks great and we’re ready to move onto to references. It’s interesting how much a career seeker is willing to talk up their experience and how successful their last employer was “because of them”. Ask them for their manager’s contact name and phone number….chirp, chirp, chirp. Recruiters have to deal with some beautiful interesting characters. I’d like to introduce the idealist who strongly believes they deserve $75K a year for a management position when they just closed down their lemonade stand that was only open on Saturdays from 10am – 2pm. Or the college graduate with no real world experience that comes into an office with a pompous flare citing they hold a BA degree and met Donlad Trump at a real estate seminar. Did I mention their degree was in pig farming and wouldn’t buy less than $120K annual salary? On the other hand, you may find a candidate that is flexible with salary but only wants to travel 2.5 miles from their home because they have to rely on their friend’s neighbor to get them to and from work. These are the individuals who will then turn to ask the recruiter to borrow ten dollars for gas money to get to work.

People, reach on! If you’re a career seeker, take some stock in what you’re doing to guide your search and gawk that there are some quality agencies that are looking to partner with quality talent but don’t waste their time. Yes, your first visit to the agency is your initial interview with any potential client they may introduce you to. When you register with an agency you need to realize they are the client liaison so that little first impression rule applies here more than ever! It’s their word that is backing you and they aren’t going to risk their credibility on someone that doesn’t care about their presentation.

Here are some tips you can take or leave at your discretion when working with an agency:

1) Understand that the agency is NOT perfect and your establishing a mutual partnership with them. Their absolute goal is to residence you in a status – IT’S HOW THEY ARE PAID!

2) Be sure to write down your recruiter’s name – remember…they are your agent.

3) Interview etiquette is key! ALWAYS wear a suit to an interview. They aren’t looking for Armani. A suit from your local neighbor retail store will work honest as well.

4) Revisit your resume and advance to terms that you may need to revamp it. Would you hire yourself? You could pay for a professional resume but why waste your money? There are plenty of resume tips, free samples, etc. on the Internet – you just have to do some work ON YOUR OWN.

5) On that note: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER show up at an interview without your resume! You should always have 2 well-kept copies of your resume to present to your interviewer (and that includes your initial visit with a recruiter). No exceptions on this one!

6) Research the agency and ask questions! If the recruiter is going too fast, ask them to repeat or slow down. Explain your hesitations or ability to want to fully understand the process. Even if you’ve worked with other agencies, don’t assume they are all the same. Too noteworthy is lost in translation and can result in a bad experience unintentionally.

7) Know what you’re going in for. When asked what type of work are you interested in, don’t just say, “anything” or “whatever you have”. This shows a lack of goal planning and decision making on your part. Know what job functions you’re okay with and don’t be afraid to voice those your not.

9) Ask your recruiter what they expect of you and what you can expect from them in return. Don’t leave without verbalizing a reciprocal agreement you both understand and can live with. It’s the foundation for a professional relationship that will be successful.

If you’re not getting the results you’re looking for – explain this to your recruiter. If you don’t perceive a change – chat with the Branch Manager. Ultimately, you may have to realize the agency is only one avenue for your employment search. Check out others and don’t be so swiftly to slam them. It could be your blinders that are preventing you from seeing other viewpoints or areas for you to refine.
